VERY RARE - These uncataloged tobacco cards are from Cuba and issued with Cabanas Cigarettes. Issued in 1909, the Cabanas cards are considered the first true Cuban baseball cards made. They include players from Cuba's Habanas (15 players in red) and Almendares (8 players in blue) teams, and also players from the American League Detroit Tigers (11 players & 1 umpire in gray). The Detroit Tigers played a few exhibition games in Cuba that year, so cards of the Tiger players are also in the set, including an umpire from the Major Leagues as well (O'Loughlin). These cards like all other cards from Cuba are often found with insect holes and or humidity damage making nice examples tough to find. To date there are 35 different players known (including at least one variation), but others may exist. |
