RARE - Issued with cigarettes, about 1.5" by 2.25"in size, these 2 sets by Aguilitas are some of the more important of all Cuban baseball card sets. Aguilitas is loaded with Cuban players along with many American Negro League players playing ball in Cuba during the winter months, including a few Hall of Famers. These real photo Cuban cards were issued in 2 separate sets. Both Aguilitas sets are very large, mainly including movie stars, stage actors, dancers, showgirls, soccer players, boxers and baseball players along with other subjects. These cards like all Cuban cards are usually found pasted in albums and often found with insect holes and or humidity damage.
The first set (from what research has found) is from 1924/25 and is actually called the "segunda serie" (second series). This 1924/25 set has all players within a circle cropping of the photo, and the words "Base Ball". It includes Cuban and Negro League players. There are actually 900 different cards in this 1924/25 set, but only 44 are baseball players. The numbers of the baseball players are from #841-#880 and #895-#899 for a total of 44 different cards.
The later Aguilitas set is from 1926/27 and is of similar size and are also real photo cards. This set only includes Cuban players and do not have the circle cropping of the photo. The 1926/27 set has baseball players (with other sports mixed in) ranging from #751-#849, for a total of 37 different baseball cards (33 different players). |
