VERY RARE - Both of these rarely seen "W" cards are in the design of a playing card.
The ca.1925 playing cards (like Meusel above) is sort of similar in style to a W560 or E285 card, but from a set that is newly cataloged and very rare. The size is roughly 1.5" by 2.5" with a blank back. It is unknown how many other players are found in this set, there have been 3 different baseball players seen (Meusel, Ruth, Speaker), along with at least 11 boxers (Jack Dempsey, Firpo, Gans, Gibbons, Jack Johnson, Ketchel, Nelson, Sullivan, Willard, Wills, Wolgast). Cards have been seen in 4 different color combinations, black on cream, black on red, red on cream, black on green.
The ca.1929 cards (like Hogan above) are a fairly crude hand drawn playing card style card produced by the Universal Toy & Novelty Co. Printed in black, red, and white with a blank back, they are 1.6" by 2.6" in size. About 5-6 different players including a Ruth ("5 of Diamonds"), Gehrig ("5 of Hearts"), and Jim Elliot (Univ. Toy/Nov. Co. logo) have been seen in this set. |
