SCARCE - Little was know of these cards until a store display was discovered in the 1980's. Originally issued in a wax paper envelope with a serial number slip. They were made by Sports Co. of America of San Francisco for the A.G. Spalding & Bros. sporting goods firm. There are other sports in this set, 49 of the cards are baseball players, 175 total different cards. They are most often found with a bio back, and less often with a blank back (handcut) or an advertising back. There is also Ruth cards known with a 1927 copyright on back. There is also quite a few cards that have been handcut from sheets.
Note: Very rare preproduction Proof cards are known with a completely different oval picture design on front, with a 1925 copyright on back (example pic), Ive seen a sheet with 32 different cards including 2 different baseball players (Hornsby, Harris). |
