1933 (E285)
Rittenhouse Candy Co. |
 |
SCARCE - 1.4" by 2.25" "playing card" style cards made by the Rittenhouse Candy Co. of Philadelphia. Slightly similar with its "playing card" design to the more common W560 Strip Cards of 1927. The fronts of the E285 cards are found printed in one of 4 colors, red, orange, green, or blue. The backs of the cards were part of a contest for prizes such as a Buck Rogers Gun, First Base Mitt, or Telescope. To win the kids needed to find all the letters to spell "R-I-T-T-E-N-H-O-U-S-E C-A-N-D-Y C-O". A single large block style black letter is printed on the backs of most cards, but some of the cards are found with the contest rules and a list of prizes and the company address on back. There have also been cards found with a number on back (5, 9). There are 52 different cards (46 different players) in the set, with 6 different players pictured on 2 cards each. |
