SCARCE - 1.4" by 2.25" "playing card" style cards made by the Rittenhouse Candy Co. of Philadelphia. Slightly similar with its "playing card" design to the more common W560 Strip Cards of 1927. The fronts of the E285 cards are found printed in one of 4 colors, red, orange, green, or blue. The backs of the cards were part of a contest for prizes. To win the kids needed to find all the letters to spell "R-I-T-T-E-N-H-O-U-S-E C-A-N-D-Y C-O". A single large block style black letter is printed on the backs of most cards, but some of the cards are found with the contest rules and a list of prizes and the company address on back. There are 2 different contest ad backs (type 1 has Buck Rogers Gun, Telescope, Microscope, etc., type 2 has Big League Ball, Air Rifle, Pearl Knife, etc.). There have been cards found with a number on the back (5, 9, 29) for some unknown reason. Cards are also found with at least 5 different paper stock colors (white, gray, yellow, pink, green), with some being quite rare. There are 52 different cards (46 different players) in the set, with 6 different players pictured on 2 cards each. |
