U3-2 "salesman sample"

These attractive matchbook covers were made by the Diamond Match Co. of N.Y.C. There are 5 different sets and most sets have many color variations. The 1934 set (U1) has silver borders and is complete at 200 different covers. The 1935 set (U2) has black borders, is the scarcest of the sets, and is complete at 24 different covers. The 1935-36 set (U3-1) has the name only on back, no team, and is complete at 156 different covers. The 1936 set (U4) has the team name on the back, its complete at 12 different covers. There is a 1937 subset of mainly Chicago Cubs players (U3-2) that is similar to the U3-1 set, with the only difference being in the bio (stats). There are 23 different covers in the Cubs subset with all but 2 players playing for the Cubs (Dean, Waner). Rare U-1 and U3-2 "salesman sample" covers (also known as "flats") are known. These "salesman sample" covers are unfolded and unstapled with a blank white bar through the striker part of cover.
