SCARCE to VERY RARE- These 3.25" by 5.6" postcard sized cards are blank back and were obtained from Gold Medal Foods Inc. of Minneapolis Minn. in 1934. There are 2 different groups of "medium pen" cards, one very rare. The more often seen 1934 cards commemorated the World Series between the Cardinals and Tigers and were offered through radio broadcasts from Oct. through Dec. of 1934. Fans would send in Wheaties box tops, 1 per card, and the cards were sent to them by mail from Gold Medal Foods. There is also an additional "medium pen" group of cards that match the Gold Medal cards but feature players from other Major League teams including at least 4 minor league players from Des Moines. This second group of cards are thought to have been offered by radio broadcast in Aug. 1933 and again the following summer. There are 12 different cards in the 1934 World Series set (6 Cardinals, 6 Tigers). There are at least 19 known cards in the very rare 1933-34 group but others most likely exist. |
